Balancing Equations
1. Find the equal sign and underline the side of the equation with no unknowns.
Think: Which side is already done for me? I see that 8 + __ needs to be solved. So I should underline 4 + 5. 2. Find the value of the underlined math fact. Think: 4 + 5 = 9. The other side should be also be the same. So, I know the other side should also be equal to 9. 3. Look at the side of the equation with an unknown. Think: What number can I add to make both sides of the equation equal? 4. Find the missing number. Think: 8 + something equals 9. So 8 + 1 = 9. 6. Check if the equation is balanced. I know 8 + 1 is 9 and 4 + 5 is 9. So the equation is balanced! |
