Grading
Throughout the week and especially in Friday Folders, your child will be bringing home many work samples. Some of these assignments were completed in class and subsequently gone over in class as a whole group or in partners. Other assignments, both classwork and homework, will be "graded" by me. For these assignments, I use the following system:
Exceeds Expectations
- I tried by best even if it was a challenge and can now teach someone.
- I followed the directions.
- My work is very neat.
- I added more detail.
-I took my time.
- I fixed my mistakes.
- I wrote in complete sentences.
- I used correct punctuation.
- I used more than 4 colors.
- I completed a bonus.
- I did extra work on my own.

Self-Regulation Tips
To help students to become more responsible for their learning, we will give them tools to help them monitor their learning and behavior. Students will learn to utilize checklists effectively and are encouraged to use them when completing homework. It is proven to:
Tips:
- Increase academic performance
- Provide individuals with tools for life long skills
- Provide intrinsic rewards
Tips:
- If you notice your child has made some mistakes on their homework tell them how many “hot spots” (errors) they have and ask them how long they think it will take them to find them all. Set a timer and let the hunt begin! After your child finds their errors they can fix them.
- Ways to ask for help: Has your child ever said “I don’t know how to do this!” Make sure they have read the directions. Then ask them to respond in one of these ways to promote self-confidence and zoom in on exactly where they are stuck:
- “May I have more information?”
- “I know ____. I don’t understand ____”
- “I don’t know what ___ means.”
- “A place for everything and everything in it’s place.” Does your child have a specific place for their backpack at home? Is there a routine and place for homework and notes from school? Creating specific places and routines for materials will help prevent lost papers and help homework get to school on time.
Growth Mindset
"In a fixed mindset, people believe their basic qualities, like their intelligence or talent, are simply fixed traits. They spend their time documenting their intelligence or talent instead of developing them. They also believe that talent alone creates success—without effort. They’re wrong.
"In a growth mindset, people believe that their most basic abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work—brains and talent are just the starting point. This view creates a love of learning and a resilience that is essential for great accomplishment." |
